Material: Ceramic
Origin: Seoul, South Korea
Seoul-born ceramic artist Jihyum Kim developed her distinctive style and colour palette during her time at London’s Royal College of Art.
Her latest series, “The Salty Fairy”, embodies an experimentation with gloop glaze to create “gravity-defying” ceramics.
The concept, which features ceramic-salt vessels in mushroom-inspired forms, stems from an ancient Korean superstition about salt’s protective qualities, and the idea that mushroom rings, AKA fairy rings, are a sign of magic.
Connecting and channelling both narratives in one direction has activated immensely visually captivating shapes, colours, and forms. Magic, mythology, and the mysticism of nature come together in ceramic pieces that make gloop glaze a structural element, not just a decorative one.
